Restored holiday villa with swimming pool surrounded by glorious countryside and olive grove

Casa Olivia is a typical Italian farmhouse turned holiday villa with a saltwater swimming pool in Le Marche. It is surrounded by glorious countryside with views of the Sibillini mountains. Being the only house at the end of a long lane, with a fenced garden, ensures privacy.

The house was built in the middle of the 19th century and was bought by the present owners, an Anglo-Italian family at the end of 2007. It has been painstakingly restored using all the original features, so there is a good combination of history and modernity. The result is that the house is full of light and lovely traditional features like painted doors and the original windows, with internal shutters.

With four bedrooms Casa Olivia is perfect for 8 adults plus one baby in a cot. The house is equipped with everything that one would have at home, as it is used frequently by the owners, their children and grandchildren. If you think there is anything missing, however small, please do let us know.

There is an olive grove and a large mulberry tree gives shade to a paved area, ideal for eating al fresco. In the large garden there is a BBQ which has lovely views for the cook.

The pool (12 x 6 meters) is an ecological saltwater pool and there is an outside shower on the back of the dispensa to rinse off the salt.

Accommodation

The original house has had the tractor shed added to it to give it more ground floor living space. This is now the eating area, kitchen and dispensa (larder). The present sitting area was where animals were kept. And the ground floor bedroom – now a double-bedded bedroom with its own ensuite shower room and WC – was where the cantina (oil and wine making) took place, together with bread baking in the small fireplace.

The farming family lived on the first floor, where there are now two double bedded bedrooms, study and bathroom (with bath & overhead shower), which was the old kitchen and the family living area. In the bathroom, the original fireplace has been retained as well as the cooking ring. There is air conditioning in all the bedrooms (they are on a timer and can be used between the hours of 8pm-7am only).

The attic rooms were used for curing hams and are now like a small flat with a double bedroom – the bed can be split into two singles – and shower with WC.

What to do?

Le Marche is often described as the secret of Italy. This pretty and relatively undiscovered region offers stunning countryside, mountains (about 40 minutes away). As well as sandy beaches and crystal-clear lakes and never-ending beautiful buildings, architecture and works of art, and excellent restaurants.

It is well worth walking around in the town of Mogliano and visiting the Abbey at Fiastra, just down the road. Although small, Mogliano does have pretty much everything you need.

Worth a visit is also Ascoli Piceno: The Piazza del Popolo is the breath-taking main square and a must-be-seen. It is said to be one of the most elegant provincial squares in all Italy. Art fans should visit the Duomo (cathedral) and the Pinacoteca Civica. Also, Macerata, which is best known now for its outdoor Opera Festival in the stunning Sferisterio.
