Exploring Le Marche on a Vespa: An Italian Adventure

We are so happy that Ralph decided to be a “guest” blogger! Ralph and his family have been coming to Le Marche for many years and know everything about what there is to do in the region. They are an active and young family and have tried many things while holidaying in various parts of Le Marche. So if you are coming to Le Marche definitely check out this blog! If you live in the Dutch region of Limburg, we strongly recommend that you visit their physiotherapy practice Fysiotherapie Bruinsma (website)!

Exploring Le Marche on a Vespa

This year we wanted a more active holiday in the Marche for our two teenage sons aged 14 and 16 this year. A day out with a Vespa, that seemed like a nice idea to us. Something different from sun, sea and swimming pool! Before the holiday we had already done some research and we ended up at “Vespa Tour Marche”. They have 3 locations in Le Marche, where you can go to rent a Vespa, which you can drive with a B driving licence. Coincidentally, there was also one in Numana, where we stayed this holiday.

Contact was quickly made via the site and then we chatted with them via the app. We were told report at the rental location on Tuesday morning. This rental point turned out to be a petrol station and upon arrival our two red Vespas were already gleaming in the sun. The Vespa Primavera 125 and stylish helmets adorned with Italian stripes were the epitome of Italian flair.

Lorenzo, our guide at the petrol station-turned-rental point, provided a brief yet informative introduction to the Vespa and the available routes. With six diverse paths to choose from, including a culinary expedition and a Sibilini mountain trail, the options were as varied as the landscape itself. There is something for everyone. Of course you can also just plan a trip on your own. The only condition was that we had to be back by 8 pm at the latest.

Because we are familiar with the region, we opted to chart our own course. We soon embarked on a personalized tour, navigating from one picturesque town to another. Sometimes to see something, other times just to eat or drink something. The initial awkwardness of riding the Vespa soon gave way to confidence, as we wove through the scenic routes that define Le Marche.

Our personalized tour

We started our tour in Numana and went via Porto Recanati to Loreto, home to the Basilica della Santa Casa. This sacred site houses what is believed to be the birthplace of Jesus, a treasure transported from Nazareth in ancient times. The basilica’s dome, second only to St. Peter’s in Rome and the Duomo in Florence, stands as a testament to Italy’s architectural grandeur.

Fuelled by cappuccinos and delicious brioches we continued our journey via Castelfidardo to Osimo, reveling in the breathtaking vistas that unfolded before us. The vast hills and panoramic views served as a backdrop to an unforgettable experience, one that combined the thrill of exploration with the joy of family bonding. And on a scooter you experience it in a completely differently way than when you are driving in a car. And while you might think that the Italian traffic, known to us as busy and chaotic, would have little patience for tourists on a scooter, we didn’t notice that. Perhaps because we were tourists, but for example we didn’t hear a horn all day, at least not directed towards us.

Osimo is one of the larger cities in this region and is a great place to take a break. From here we then via Offagna, Montesicuro to Osimo Stazione for a hot meal, a plate of pasta is of course also part of today. Then to Camerano to finally end up in Sirolo. A cozy village on the coast, where you can get delicious “gelato” among other things, which of course should not be missed to end the day.

After we had driven up and down the coast a bit, we finally returned the scooters to the rental point well in time after a beautiful day. We all agreed that this is definitely worth repeating!
